Chapter Four

Dreams of Beau had occupied her mind and disturbed her sleep to leave her listless and tired. Or it could have been too much wine? She couldn’t really recall what had possessed her to drink that much. Except maybe the surreal encounter with her twisted ex-boyfriend, combined with the appearance of a huge black wolf-like dog.

Yep, that would do it.

Whatever it was, thoughts of Beau had entangled themselves in her head, to weave in and out of reality. Desire had risen, as his remembered kiss invaded her sleep. The smooth touch of his warm lips feathered across her brow, and his breath whispered in her ear. Temptation had nudged her, while his warm hand caressed her breast. His voice murmured unintelligible words of love, until she awoke to find her arms full of soft black fur, a numb shoulder, and the wolf’s nose tucked behind her ear.

If she’d been in any kind of danger from the big beast, she would have been dead by now. There was obviously nothing to fear from him.

His hot breath dampened her neck, until she shoved him off and fought her way out of the mess of covers, to fall in an ungainly heap on the floor. She peeled herself off the rug, and wondered what it was about the wolf that had inspired dreams of Beau.

“C’mon, boy.” She headed for the back door, and watched him trot reluctantly through the thick carpet of snow in her back yard. He paused every few steps, and cast a wary look behind him, as though he thought she might shut the door on him and leave him out in the cold. Her heart stirred. She hadn’t thrown him out the night before, when she’d no idea whether he was friendly.

She left the door off the latch, and wandered into the bathroom to get ready for work.

Jaw cracking with the pressure of her yawn, she returned to the kitchen. She squinted at the peaceful vision of the wolf in the corner of her room, as though he belonged. A puddle of water from the snow he’d trailed stretched from the back door to where the handsome black dog lay. His chocolate eyes seemed somehow apologetic.

“You’re going to cause me some work, boy. I’m not used to anyone else living here.”

She grabbed a mop and bucket out of her cupboard, filled the bucket with hot water and disinfectant. She glanced at the time, and made quick work as she wiped up the mess. At least it was only snow, and not the thick mud they were inclined to get when it rained hard.

She made herself coffee, and eyed him while she spread butter on her toast. “I only have raw mince to give you for breakfast.” He raised his head, licked his lips. “I guess that will have to do for now.”

She placed a bowl on the floor with the mince in, and smiled as he dashed to eat it with gusto. She filled another bowl with water, and put it down beside the first one.
